For this exhibition l have presented 16 artworks: Etchings on PVC, Collagraphs and Paintings.

I would like to refer to the collagraph work as this is the technique I am presently working with.

I began to experiment with the collagraph (etching) technique after I concluded my personal exhibition “Girls with Dogs” (2005), shown at the Panorama Hotel in Havana City. My motivation came up during the work process used for such exhibition. Previously, and during such period, I had visited several etching exhibitions. Among them, the one that called my attention was the collagraph exhibition works by Belkis Ayón, due to the treatment of textures and the experimental possibilities provided by such technique. I believe that my encounter with the graphic work of such exceptional etcher was decisive for my purpose of learning about and working with this technique.

During the second half of 2005, I gave my first steps towards learning such procedure in a private workshop located in Cotorro. Then, I continued to inquire and obtain more information from watching the process of construction and printing of matrixes in several workshops and studios of different artists who worked this technique in Havana. Among them were: Mary Cary’s and Manglar’s Studio, Choco’s Workshop and the Graphics Workshop. I also reviewed some literature on the subject written by the art critic David Mateo.

My visits to artist Eduardo Roca (Choco)’s workshop since early 2007 have been very useful for the improvement of my collagraphs. There, I was able to appreciate the complete procedure from the making of the matrix to the printing process.

I am presently working with this mysterious technique and very often it results in expected or otherwise unexpected productions. Due to my experimentation and constant practice, I have been able to draw some general conclusions: to obtain a long lasting matrix, the selection, relation, use and pasting of materials are very important. In addition, there are indispensable steps that are connected as well as subordinated, and they begin with a hint of the final result of the work. Such processes become increasingly acute and complex with experiences accumulated by the artist during her continuous creative work.

For this collective exhibition called “Positions”, I will introduce my first etching artworks.
